Name and public lists
China’s National Health Commission announcement No. 4 of 18 August 2022 updates the list of strains that may be used in food (可用于食品的菌种名单). 嗜酸乳杆菌, Lactobacillus acidophilus, is on that list. The updated Latin name and the former Latin name on the list are the same. The announcement states that strains used in infant food follow a separate list. For EFSA safety assessments, the 2025 list of microorganisms recommended for a qualified presumption of safety (QPS) is Appendix E of the January 2026 update. The list names the species Lactobacillus acidophilus. QPS is a pre-assessment for EFSA. It is not a market authorisation and it is not a certificate for a lot. The qualification on these rows is that the strain should not harbour acquired antimicrobial resistance genes to clinically relevant antimicrobials.
